Jess was first introduced to the family at Christmas 1996. She was a Christmas throw out, apparently handed into
Colchester Police station as a stray dog.
Mum got wind that there was this dear "little" ball of black fluff looking for a home, Jess had mange disease and was locked in a cold concrete kennel with little protection. Mum couldn't bring herself to leave empty handed. After paying a small fee for the privilege of giving a homeless dog a home, this 'little' ball of black fluff was brought home looking rather rejected. Tufts of fur were missing and she was covered in a sticky substance, some sort of treatment for the mange. We were all a bit anti that Mum had brought this mess into the house but agreed she looked so unhappy that we would give her ago. Because of the treatment we couldn't give her a bath so for the first two weeks she just didn't get touched. The treatment worked wonders and her fur grew back, her first bath was wonderful and she loved it. For the first time in however long she was clean and no longer ponged so we were able to give her in return some of the love she had been trying to show us. As Jess was a stray, we had no idea of her age so we took her along to the vets who estimated she was between 5 & 8 months old Labrador & Border Collie cross, so she was still almost a puppy. This raised questions as whether or not she required inoculations, been house trained and so on. With the Vet bits sorted we tried to continue a fairly normal life for her. The 'little' ball of black fluff soon turned into a large ball of fluff, more than doubling her size and weight, oh! and it turned out she wasn't house trained. The post was chewed the shoes were chewed not to mention Mums hand-carved chairs. Many frustrating hours of training turned a potential hooligan into the most loving dog in the world. No one person could ever give Jess the love she wants, it's continuous, every time you move, she moves with you, every time you come in the house, she's all over you, every time you sit on the floor, she sits on you! She has so much love for everyone its gorgeous.
Jess has a house full of toys but she likes her small footballs best of all, I've never known a dog to have so much energy, all she wants to do is run and fetch the ball all
of the time.
Jess also enjoys playing football, trying hard at playing mid-field, she needs to polish up her dribbling skills but being the goal keeper is what she does best.
Jess now weights about 25Kg, she has a luxuriously soft and thick coat, she gets treated like the queen (only second to Pao) and enjoys a very happy life. How did someone bring themselves to dump such a lovely lady ? All in all, this stinking stray mutt has turned into such a lovely companion, we just would not be without her. |
