Steve's Travelling Page ~ Koh Samui

Koh Samui ~ Thailand

19th November 1999 ~ 24th November 1999.

Our first destination was Koh Samui, following a 13 hour flight from the UK to Singapore, 3 hours from Singapore to Bangkok and 1 hour from Bangkok to Koh Samui.

Koh Samui is a small island in the Gulf of Thailand, that's approximately 15Km by 15Km in size. We are booked into a place called Coco Palm Resort, located in Maenam in the north of the island.

Maenam is apparently where all the honeymooners go, it attracts them because it continues to display it's natural beauty having not yet been too affected by tourism. We found the place to be absolutely gorgeous, so different from anything either of us had ever encountered. As we drove from the airport, I kept expecting to look of the place to improve, everything looked almost derelict, I soon realised that 'this is Thailand' and soon become fond of it. The people seemed to have zero possessions but were always happy and jolly, unlike the local bus queue here on a Monday morning.
During our 6 day stay, we managed to cover nearly all of the island, most of the beaches and many of the mountains, we also ate some of the most gorgeous food there is, just pay no attention to the state of the kitchens, avoid looking in and if you do, don't let it spoil your meal !

We found Maenam just far to quite for us, but getting around the island on the moped was quite easy if you don't let the traffic put you off, just watch yourself on those poor dusty roads. The taxi's are just great, you all pile in the back of a pick up truck, character building I call it.
